Pearl Jam is scheduled to go into a Seattle studio March 1 to begin work on its follow-up to the 4-million-selling debut, “Ten.” Meanwhile, guitarist Stone Gossard’s side project funk band found that its chosen name, Shame, was already taken. The group has changed the moniker to Brad, with an album due March 30. . . .

The Pixies have officially broken up on the eve of the release of leader Black Francis’ solo album (done under the name Frank Black). Guitarist Joey Santiago appears on that album and may tour with Francis/Black, while bassist Kim Deal is focusing on her other band, the Breeders, which is recording an album in San Francisco. Drummer David Lovering has been recording with English industrial group Nitzer Ebb. . . .

Grade-school rappers Another Bad Creation have a second album due in early June. . . .

EMI has acquired the rights for U.S. release of the soundtrack to the film “The Crying Game.” Among the selections is a remake of the title song (an old Burt Bacharach hit) by Boy George, produced by the Pet Shop Boys. . . .

Pop rapper Monie Love, who’s aiming to trade in her friendly pop persona for a tough street image, has recruited Prince to help. He produced two cuts on her new album, which is due in early March. . . . Former Bon Jovi manager Doc McGhee has an interesting marketing approach for his Cry Baby Records’ debut of Litl Willie, a band made up of four brothers between the ages of 7 and 13. The album will only be available through an 800 phone number and at the band’s shows, including a Southern U.S. swing opening for Lynyrd Skynyrd. . . .

Fishbone is just finishing up its next album, with a mouthful of a title: “Give a Monkey a Brain and He’ll Swear He’s the Center of the Universe.” Terry Date, who has worked with Pantera and Soundgarden, produced. . . .

An intriguing blues and rockabilly band is set to make its debut at the West L.A. club the Gate on Wednesday. Calling itself Cheap Date, the band has Tin Machine’s Tony Sales on bass, Stray Cats drummer Slim Jim Phantom, former Doobie Brother Jeff (Skunk) Baxter on pedal steel, guitarist Jamie James and actor Harry Dean Stanton on vocals. . . .

Tool has just finished its first full album, “Undertow,” due March 23. Henry Rollins guests on one song. . . . Cause & Effect is working on its second album and first since the death last November of keyboardist Sean Rowley.
