LITTLE TOKYO : Senior Housing Project Reduced

Share

The City Council’s planning and land-use management committee last week voted to scale down a proposal to build a low-income senior housing project.

The committee approved a 49-unit project, 14 fewer units than the Los Angeles City Planning Committee recommended in August. The developer, the nonprofit Chinese Community Service Center, originally requested permission to build an 86-unit housing project on the one-acre site.

Local critics of the project, at 1727-1739 Horton Ave., have called for a 42-unit housing complex, saying anything larger would cause traffic problems. With a state-mandated density bonus for low-income housing, the Chinese Community Service Center could build 25 units without a variance.

But representatives of the center say more units are needed to make the project economically feasible. The land is owned by Alice Chang.

The project still requires City Council approval.
