Share

Murder charges were filed Monday against a man accused of killing a 78-year-old South-Central Los Angeles woman so he could steal her 13-inch television set.

Huey Ferguson Jr. worked as a part-time gardener for Ruth Isabel Roberts, who was stabbed to death on Jan. 22 in her West 73rd Street home.

Roberts, affectionately known to her neighbors as “Baby Ruth,” was a longtime resident of the area. Her body was found by neighbors, who became concerned when they could not contact her.

Ferguson was charged with one count each of murder, first-degree residential robbery and first-degree residential burglary. Attached to the murder count are allegations that Ferguson murdered Roberts during a burglary and robbery. If he is convicted, and those allegations are proven, Ferguson could be executed.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Theodore Loewen said that both physical evidence and eyewitness identification led police to Ferguson, but he refused to elaborate.
