Dr. C.E. (Bud) Clever; Retired Dentist

Dr. C.E. (Bud) Clever, a longtime Palmdale dentist who was involved with a host of civic activities, has died in Banning, Calif. He was 70.

A resident of Palmdale since 1956, Clever died Thursday of a heart attack, said his wife, Paula Clever.

Clever, who was born in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, came to California as a child and graduated from Alhambra High School in 1941. During World War II, he served as a lieutenant junior grade in the U. S. Navy in the South Pacific. After graduating from USC School of Dentistry in 1956, he moved to Palmdale and established his first practice on Palmdale Boulevard. Five years later, Clever moved his office to 9th Street East, where he practiced general dentistry until his retirement in 1985. Clever had also been an associate professor of pre-clinical operative dentistry at USC from 1975 to 1986.

His civic activities include serving as past president of the Palmdale Rotary Club, the Antelope Valley Family Service Assn. board of directors, the Eye-Opener chapter of Toastmasters International in Lancaster and the Antelope Valley Symphony Assn. A founding member of the Antelope Valley Community Orchestra, Clever played the violin and viola with the orchestra from the late 1950s until the late 1980s.

In addition to his wife of 41 years, Clever is survived by his son Scott Clever of San Diego; daughter Lynda Clever of San Diego; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Visitation is planned from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Chapel of the Valley Mortuary, 38141 6th St. East, Palmdale, which is handling the arrangements. A funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at the mortuary, with burial to follow at Desert Lawn Memorial Park in Palmdale. Donations can be made in Clever’s name to the Salvation Army.
