LOS ANGELES : Public Transit Subsidies for Elderly Expanded

Share

Twice as many senior citizens and disabled people will receive subsidized bus, taxi and Dial-A-Ride service under an expanded transportation program approved Tuesday by the Los Angeles City Council.

About 98,000 residents will be eligible beginning in April for books of transit script that will reduce the cost of using public transit. Fewer than 50,000 people are currently eligible.

The council action also expands the City Ride program to parts of the city, including sections of the Eastside and San Fernando Valley, that have not previously been served.

Los Angeles residents over 65 and disabled people of all ages qualify for $60 worth of script per quarter. Those who fall within federal poverty standards will receive the script for $6, a dollar increase over the previous charge; all others will pay $15.
