From Times Staff and Wire Reports

City officials said Fire Chief D’Wayne Scott will be fired because of alleged alcohol abuse, chronic absences and his refusal to send firefighters into Los Angeles during the spring riots. Scott said he will appeal the move, denying he did anything wrong. He has until Feb. 10 to respond to the city’s charges. His troubles began last April when he was the only fire chief in Southern California’s mutual aid network to refuse to send assistance to Los Angeles on the first night of rioting.
