A summary of significant Los Angeles City Hall decisions affecting the Westside in the last week.

CITY COUNCIL

RIOT EQUIPMENT: Councilmen Marvin Braude and John Ferraro have introduced a proposal to allow the Los Angeles Police Department to spend $1,037,472 in grant money to buy additional equipment, including foam rubber bullets, helmets, shields and vehicles, in preparation for any unrest that might result from verdicts in the federal trial in which four officers are charged in the beating of Rodney G. King beating and the upcoming trial of defendants in the beating of Reginald O. Denny. The entire council must act on the proposal.

SIMON WIESENTHAL CENTER: Approved the temporary closure of Roxbury Drive just south of Pico Boulevard during the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s dedication ceremony for its Museum of Tolerance from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. The city will absorb $13,928 for fees and city employee overtime costs.

HOW THEY VOTED

How Westside representatives voted on selected issues .

RACISM: Approved a six-point proposal that declares Los Angeles a “Racism Free City” and encourages schools, churches, offices and homes to declare themselves “Racism Free Zones.” The proposal calls on elected officials and public figures to promote racial harmony and “not engage in racially insensitive acts.” Passed: 12-0.

VOTING YES: Ruth Galanter, Ferraro, Mark Ridley-Thomas, Michael Woo and Zev Yaroslavsky. Braude and Nate Holden absent.

SENIOR TRANSIT HIKE: Approved a proposal to increase by $10 the cost of transit discount coupons for senior citizens who use buses, taxis and the city’s Dial-a-Ride services. Coupons valued at $60 will now be sold for $15 to most seniors. Low-income seniors will pay $6 for the same amount. The program is expected to go into effect citywide April 1. Passed: 11-0.

VOTING YES: Braude, Galanter, Ferraro, Ridley-Thomas and Yaroslavsky. Holden and Woo absent.

ECONOMIC SUMMIT: Approved a proposal to broadcast parts of the two-day economic summit hosted by the state Assembly in Los Angeles on the city’s Channel 35 cable television station. The summit will be Feb. 16-17. Passed: 11-0.

VOTING YES: Braude, Galanter, Ferraro, Ridley-Thomas and Yaroslavsky. Holden and Woo absent.

SETTLEMENT: Approved a $51,500 settlement in a lawsuit by a 53-year-old woman who was injured when she tripped and fell on a mound of asphalt in Pacific Palisades on Nov. 11, 1990. Passed: 11-0.

VOTING YES: Braude, Galanter, Ferraro, Holden, Ridley-Thomas and Woo. Yaroslavsky absent.

COMING UP AT CITY COUNCIL

CAMPAIGN FUNDS: The council on Friday is expected to discuss a formula by which candidates shall receive public matching funds during the upcoming primary election.
