Squad Detonates Dynamite in Shed

IRVINE — A maintenance worker cleaning out a portable storage shed Tuesday afternoon discovered a box filled with sticks of old dynamite.
The worker called police at 3 p.m. after discovering the box, which was leaking and had the word “dynamite” written on it, Irvine Police Sgt. Gary Shull said.
The Orange County sheriff’s bomb squad was called to a storage facility in the 15000 block of Sand Canyon Avenue where it discovered about 25 pounds of dynamite that appeared to be at least 2 years old, Shull said.
Employees at the city public works facility, located about 100 yards away, had to be evacuated for three hours. By 6 p.m., the bomb squad had safely detonated the explosives without incident.
“Instead of transporting the stuff, they burnt it right there,” Shull said. “They figured that was the safest way to handle it.”
It is not known who the dynamite belonged to.
