COLLEGE BASKETBALL PACIFIC 10 ROUNDUP : Arizona State Beats Cal, 90-83

Marcell Capers stole the ball and made a layup with 2:36 left to help Arizona State hold off California, 90-83, in a Pacific 10 Conference game Thursday night at Tempe, Ariz.

The Sun Devils (11-5 overall, 5-3 in the Pac-10) scored 62 points in the second half to win their third consecutive game.

Stevin Smith had 15 of his 22 points in the second half, including three three-pointers after intermission. His two free throws gave Arizona State an 86-81 lead with 33 seconds left.

Tes Whitlock added 15 points and Lester Neal had 14 for the Sun Devils.

Jason Kidd had 18 points and 11 assists for Cal. Lamond Murray scored 16 before fouling out with 2:49 to play. Alfred Grigsby added 14 points.

The Bears had a 34-28 halftime lead, but Arizona State went ahead to stay, 49-47, on a basket by reserve center Robert Conlisk with 14:48 left.

Smith added a three-pointer 50 seconds later.

No. 8 Arizona 96, Stanford 61--At Tucson, the Wildcats held the Cardinal to 19 points in the first half and coasted to their 12th consecutive victory.

Khalid Reeves scored 17 points and Joseph Blair had 16 for Arizona (14-2, 8-0), which outrebounded Stanford, 54-24. The Cardinal fell to 6-14 and 1-7.
