British Airways Chairman Steps Down Early: Lord King said he’s retiring early, his success at transforming a money-losing state-run carrier into a successful private company overshadowed in the end by a “dirty tricks” scandal. King, 75, insisted his immediate departure had nothing to do with British Airways’ dispute with Virgin Atlantic Airways, founded by entrepreneur Richard Branson. Branson pursued BA and King in court after learning his larger rival had improperly stolen passengers and spread rumors about Virgin. Branson has already extracted a libel settlement of $5.3 million and two humiliating public apologies from King, who ended up quitting five months ahead of schedule. Sir Colin Marshall, 59, now chief executive, will take over immediately as chairman.
