Santa Ana Scout Attains Eagle Rank

Boy Scout Scott Nhon-Kiet T. Nguyen, 18, of Santa Ana received his Eagle rank at a court of honor Jan. 17 at Kono Restaurant in Santa Ana. The UC Irvine freshman worked with Habitat for Humanity, a group of volunteers who build homes for low-income families, for his community service project.

Scott belongs to Troop 16.

William E. Yingling, a Corona del Mar resident and longtime supporter of Boy Scouts, was presented the 1992 Boy Scout Award by the Orange County Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He is chairman and chief executive of the Thrifty Corp.

Craig Christian of Anaheim and Caroline Alonzo of La Mirada were named homecoming king and queen of Fullerton College.

Melanie Rinker, a sixth-grader at Castille Elementary School in Mission Viejo, was named one of five top winners in a National Art Contest for the visually impaired.

Melanie’s work, titled “Dalmatians” will be exhibited along with the other winners by the American Printing House for the Blind in Louisville, Ky., sponsor of the contest.

J. Edward Berk, a Laguna Hills resident and UC Irvine professor at the College of Medicine, was named Bockus Medalist and Lecturer by the World Organization of Gastroenterology.

The award and lecture will take place at the World Congress of Gastroenterology in Los Angeles in September, 1994.

The international organization sponsors a world congress every four years. Selection of the medalist and lecturer is determined by a vote of member societies.

Costa Mesa residents Margaret Fuller and Ruth Wilson of the Costa Mesa Literacy Center have completed a 30-hour tutor training course; Betty Kovalenko of Irvine graduated from an 18-hour English as a second language program, while 23 others graduated as Certified Laubach Literacy Tutors.

The graduates include Pam Barbara, Robert Caffery, Janet Ferry, Mel House, Pat Wheeler and Mary Weyer, all of Costa Mesa; Maggie Brown and Maria Roberts of Santa Ana; Richard Cardello and Julia Judy of Irvine.

Also graduating were Dixie Dean, Tustin; William Garcia, Garden Grove; Eleanora House, Ruth Krieg, Cindy Pugh and Anne Weigand, Newport Beach; Holly Hubbard, Laguna Beach; Virginia Lackas, Anaheim; Elaine Linhoff, Balboa; Anita Lisch, Regina Savage, Marilou Swenson and Pat Thompson, Huntington Beach.

The volunteers will be assigned to one of 20 learning centers in central Orange County.

Mark Flannery, 46, personnel director for the city of Fullerton since 1977, has been elected president of the League of California Cities’ Department of Personnel and Employee Relations, which includes personnel and labor relations directors from cities throughout the state.

Fullerton residents Owen Holmes, analyst for Cal State Fullerton; Eva Van Ginneken, chairwoman of the college’s department of foreign language and literature; and attorney Nilane Lee have been appointed to the Fullerton Museum Center Board of Trustees.

Costa Mesa attorney Paul S. Meyer has been admitted as a Fellow to the American College of Trial Lawyers.
