Notes about your surroundings

Bolsa Chica Field Trip--The Sea & Sage chapter of the National Audubon Society will host a field trip to the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve on Wednesday.

Bolsa Chica is home to a large variety of wintering birds, including waterfowl, shorebirds, loons, grebes, herons and egrets.

Bird-watchers can usually spot between 40 and 50 species of birds during a half-day trip, and there’s always a chance of a rare sighting as well.

Those who would like to go on the field trip are asked to meet at 8 a.m. at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve parking lot on Pacific Coast Highway about half a mile south of Warner Avenue, across from Bolsa Chica State Beach.

For more information on the trip, call the chapter office at (714) 261-7963.

Several Sea & Sage chapter-hosted field trips have been canceled due to rainy or muddy conditions this winter. To find out if a field trip has been canceled, call the chapter’s rare bird hot line at (714) 563-6516 the day before the trip for last-minute information; call the chapter office for details about a trip’s rescheduling.

Rancho Mission Viejo Trip--South Coast Audubon, a chapter of the National Audubon Society, will host a trip to the Rancho Mission Viejo Nature Preserve at 8 a.m. on Thursday.

It will be the first field trip ever hosted by the chapter to the 1,200-acre site, in an unincorporated area of the county off Ortega Highway, about five miles east of Interstate 5.

For more information, call trip leader Marie Patterson at (714) 496-1542.
