Dozens of Anglers Flee Wind-Made Ice Floes
Dozens of people fishing on Saginaw Bay were rescued after being trapped on ice floes created by sudden high winds, officials said.
At least 50 people walked to safety Friday night after 40-m.p.h. winds began breaking up the ice, the U.S. Coast Guard said. No injuries were reported.
The Coast Guard sent two helicopters after the first reports of people stranded on at least four floes were received, but the wind that broke up the floes pushed them back toward shore, and people began walking to safety, Coast Guard officials said.
Some people fell in the water while trying to jump to shore, but they were pulled to safety.
