Red Line Subway Debut

Share

I totally agree that the “Red Line Should Follow Wilshire” (Commentary, Jan. 27). It would make even more sense to go farther west than Westwood, in fact, right up to the Pacific Ocean.

Millions of people visit the beach in Southern California for at least six months of the year, and on weekends the rest of the time. Just try to get a parking spot at Santa Monica during those times. Good luck! And all of them arrive via smelly, gas-guzzling, pollution-producing automobiles or buses.

When I was a teen-ager in Brooklyn I rode the subway to Coney Island. After I came to L.A. some 50 years ago I rode the streetcar to the beach at Santa Monica. Now, alas, there are no streetcars, thanks to Texaco, Chevron, Union, etc.

Enjoying a day of fun and fresh air on the sand without paying for it by breathing smog and parking the car would be a blessing. So, for my part of the tax dollars I’d like a subway to the beach some day (if I live long enough).
