There’s something about Bob Devaney Sports Center that makes Nebraska a giant-killer and No. 3 Kansas merely a giant.

That was demonstrated again Sunday when freshman Terrance Badgett and senior Derrick Chandler led a second-half surge that lifted Nebraska to a 68-64 upset of the Jayhawks in a Big Eight Conference game at Lincoln, Neb.

Nebraska, which improved its record to 15-7 overall and 3-4 in the Big Eight, has won four of the last five meetings with Kansas and has a 13-4 record in games against the Jayhawks at Lincoln.

The Cornhuskers won last year’s game at Lincoln in overtime on a last-second basket.

“Today we were fired up,” Nebraska forward Eric Piatkowski said. “We really needed this game. We were 2-4 in the Big Eight. We hadn’t beaten a ranked team. We want to go to the NCAA. We were on national television. They are a team we’ve had success against in the past. Everything was perfect.”

Kansas (18-3, 5-1 in the Big Eight) saw a 12-point second-half lead erased during a run led by Badgett, who scored eight of his 11 points after halftime. Kansas, one of the best shooting teams in the nation, made only 28% of its shots during the second half.

Nebraska was leading, 66-64, when Rex Walters, Kansas’ leading scorer, drove for the basket, missed and Badgett came down with the rebound. He was fouled by Walters but missed both free throws to give the Jayhawks another shot.

Walters again drove for the basket, but Chandler tipped the ball out and Badgett came up with it. Badgett’s slam dunk sealed the victory.

“When you have the ball in Rex Walters’ hands you have got the situation you want,” Kansas Coach Roy Williams said.

No. 7 Michigan 84, No. 19 Purdue 76--Jimmy King scored 24 points as the Wolverines handed the Boilermakers only their second road loss.

Juwan Howard scored 18 points for Michigan (18-3, 7-2), which made 58% of its shots.

Glenn Robinson made five three-point baskets and scored 31 points for Purdue (13-5, 4-5), which is 7-2 on the road.

No. 13 Wake Forest 106, Temple 69--The nonconference defeat at Philadelphia was Temple’s worst at home.

Temple (9-8) has lost three consecutive nonconference games by an average margin of 24.3 points. The Owls’ loss against Wake Forest was only two points short of their worst defeat, a 68-29 loss to Kentucky in 1947.

Rodney Rogers scored 34 points for Wake Forest (15-3), which won its seventh consecutive game.

Wake Forest made 61% of its shots during the first half, including seven of 11 three-point attempts, to take a 49-21 lead.

North Carolina Charlotte 68, No. 18 Tulane 64--Bershuan Thompson, who had missed eight of nine shots, made a jump shot from the top of the key with 22 seconds left in overtime to give UNCC (10-8, 4-2) the Metro Conference victory at Charlotte, N.C.
