MISSION HILLS : Boy Honored for Rescue in Wash

Share

A 14-year-old boy who pulled a 10-year-old from the Pacoima Wash last week received money for a college fund from the rescued boy’s grateful family during a commendation ceremony Tuesday.

David Copado of Sylmar received an undisclosed amount of money from the family of Bret Caillouet of Van Nuys during an awards presentation at Holy Cross Medical Center, where the boys were treated for hypothermia after the rescue, hospital Marketing Director Reenie Collins said. The hospital also presented Copado with its first-ever Holy Cross Heroes Award, Collins said.

David was walking near the water when he heard Bret, who had been sucked downstream while riding his bike in the wash, screaming for help. While trying to grab Bret, David also was pulled into the water.

David helped keep Bret afloat for three miles until he could pull him to the side and out of the water.
