Long Beach : Redevelopment Agency Alters Land Purchase Rules

Share

The Redevelopment Agency board, bowing to public pressure, revised a policy that allowed the executive director of the agency to buy land in parts of downtown and west Long Beach without its approval.

The board voted unanimously and with no comment to adopt a policy that requires any land purchases of more than $50,000 to be approved by the board.

The board was recently criticized after Executive Director Susan Shick, acting under the 1986 policy, approved the $500,000 purchase of a harbor commissioner’s property.

In a related matter, a business group asked the City Council on Tuesday to restructure the agency board to create greater accountability. Most council members, however, said they believe that the agency is functioning well, and no action was taken.
