Elin Jane Waite; Artist, Educator

Elin Jane Waite, an illustrator who taught at several universities and art schools, has died in Palmdale. She was 59.

A resident of Studio City, Miss Waite died Jan. 30 of heart failure, said a longtime friend, Leo Monahan.

Born in Redondo Beach, she earned a bachelor’s degree in art from the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles. From the early 1960s until the early 1970s, she was art director of Westways magazine, illustrating covers for the magazine and other publications.

Beginning in the 1970s and continuing until recently, Miss Waite taught art classes at various universities and art schools, including Cal State Northridge and Long Beach State.

Past president of the Society of Illustrators Los Angeles, Miss Waite received a life achievement award from the organization in the early 1980s.

She has no immediate survivors.

A funeral was held Thursday, with burial at San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Mission Hills. J. T. Oswald Mortuary in North Hollywood handled arrangements.
