COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine Women Stop Streaks by Beating Cal State Fullerton

UC Irvine ended several losing streaks with a 72-55 victory over Cal State Fullerton in a Big West Conference women’s basketball game Thursday at Fullerton.

The victory by the Anteaters (2-17, 1-10 in conference) ended an 11-game losing streak this season as well as a 12-game conference losing streak that extends back to last season.

It also ended a 25-game road conference losing streak. Before Thursday, Irvine had last won on the road Jan. 14, 1991 at San Jose State.

Irvine led, 36-32, at the half and pulled away in the second half thanks in part to the play of sophomore guard Michelle Kahler. She had 12 points in the second half to finish with a career-high 15. Yvonne Catala also had 18 for UC Irvine.

Shayla Bradshaw had 12 points for Fullerton (4-14, 2-12) before fouling out with 1 minute 10 seconds left.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s basketball:

UC Riverside 84, Chapman 64--Melody Earle had 29 points for host Chapman (2-19, 0-8).

Debbie Fischer, a former Edison High standout, scored 20 points for Riverside (14-8, 6-2). Fischer was six of nine in three-point attempts for Riverside.

In nonconference baseball:

Cal State Dominguez Hills 6, Christ College Irvine 1--Mike Crumrine had two hits for Christ College Irvine, which fell to 2-2.

Biola 6, Southern California College 4--Jason Brissey had two runs batted in for Southern California College, which fell to 1-2.
