PALMDALE : Council Denies Bid for Alcohol at Fair

The Palmdale City Council has denied a request by the Chamber of Commerce to serve alcohol at a proposed street fair over the Fourth of July weekend.

By a unanimous vote, the council Thursday approved use of the City Hall area for the July 3-4 street carnival, but decided against issuing an alcohol sales permit after hearing from people who criticized the chamber’s proposal.

“We support the street fair, but we don’t support the sale of alcohol,” said Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Aranda, commander of the Palmdale station.

“It’s a drain on our resources. It’s a holiday weekend, plus, we don’t know who has been drinking before they come to the street fair,” Aranda said.

Because the event will be held on city property, Councilwoman Teri Jones said selling liquor would expose the city to a liability risk. Resident Lee Richardson commented that selling alcohol in such an environment would create problems for families.
