Hailstones ranging in size from rock salt to M & Ms pelted the Southland from Altadena to San Juan Capistrano on Sunday evening, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
“It’s been hailing on and off for an hour,” Deputy Kathy Jaurine reported from the Altadena sheriff’s station.
National Weather Service forecaster Marty Shipman said the hail and heavy rain fell across the foothills from Agoura Hills to Altadena.
Scattered power outages from Norco to San Clemente were reported in the aftermath of the brief but furious storm, which was expected to abate today but return with new vigor at midweek, forecasters said. The chance of rain by Tuesday afternoon was put at 40%.
