The San Jose Sharks ended their 17-game losing streak and avoided NHL history Sunday with a 3-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets at Winnipeg.

Kelly Kisio scored twice as the Sharks escaped becoming the first NHL team to lose 18 consecutive games. Johan Garpenlov also scored for San Jose, which began its losing streak on Jan. 4.

“I was concerned for the players because there was a tremendous pressure that was mounting on them,” Shark Coach George Kingston said.

The Sharks tied the record held by the 1974-75 Washington Capitals with a 6-0 defeat to the Edmonton Oilers Friday night.

“We’re a pretty excited bunch of guys right now,” Kisio said. “It’s a big load off my mind.”

San Jose (7-28-2) needs to win two of its last 27 games to avoid matching Washington’s record of only eight victories.

Detroit 5, Chicago 3--Steve Yzerman scored three goals and set up two others at Chicago as the Red Wings moved to within three points of the first-place Blackhawks in the Norris Division.

The hat trick was Yzerman’s 18th, his third this season.

Buffalo 7, Pittsburgh 4--Pat LaFontaine scored a goal and had two assists at Buffalo to move into a tie with Mario Lemieux for the NHL’s scoring lead at 104 points.

Alexander Mogilny scored his league-leading 55th and 56th goals for the Sabres, tying the club record set by Danny Gare in 1979-80.
