PORT HUENEME : City Council to Discuss Budget Cuts
The Port Hueneme City Council will discuss proposals to cut the city’s budget during a public study session Wednesday.
After the two-hour session, which begins at 5 p.m. in the conference room at City Hall, the council will vote on the proposals at its 7:30 meeting.
The proposals to slash the city’s $7.2-million budget include:
* Eliminating nearly a dozen jobs.
* Cutting Port Hueneme’s lifeguard service.
* Closing the 588-seat Dorill B. Wright Cultural Center.
The study session will include an analysis of the General Fund, discussion of a possible reduction in city services and a proposal to contract with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department for police services.
Even if the council implements $371,000 in cuts suggested by City Manager Dick Velthoen, the city will face an estimated $85,000 shortfall, Velthoen said.
Council members and city staff are also scheduled to discuss options for increasing revenues.
Staff will also present a status report on a plan to build an recreational vehicle resort at Hueneme Beach.
