NBA ROUNDUP : O’Neal Has 46, but Pistons Win

Shaquille O’Neal of the Orlando Magic had a career-high 46 points and added 21 rebounds and five blocked shots against the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday night, but the rookie missed five consecutive free throws--four in overtime--as the Magic lost to the Pistons, 124-120, at Auburn Hills, Mich.

Joe Dumars tied a season-high with 39 points for Detroit. Terry Mills scored 24 and Isiah Thomas had 19 assists as the Pistons remained unbeaten in their four-year, 14-game history against Orlando.

Detroit received a boost with the return of Dennis Rodman, who played in his first game after missing more than a month because of a torn calf muscle. Rodman scored four points in overtime and had 12 rebounds, as the Pistons improved to 18-12 with him in the lineup.

After the game Piston center Olden Polynice said he is joining the Rev. Jesse Jackson on a hunger strike to protest U.S. immigration policies concerning Haitian refugees.

Polynice was born in Haiti.

Polynice said he would not eat during the NBA All-Star break, which begins for the Pistons after tonight’s game at Miami.

After the break, he said he’ll probably only eat on game days.

Phoenix 110, Boston 97--Charles Barkley scored 32 points and Tom Chambers added 22 as the Suns won for the 17th consecutive time at Phoenix.

Boston, which scored only 15 points in the second quarter, was led by Dee Brown, who had a career-high 18 assists, and Reggie Lewis, who scored 24 points.

Portland 105, Atlanta 90--Clyde Drexler scored 29 points to lead the Trail Blazers past the Hawks at Portland.

The victory was only the second for Portland in seven games. The Hawks have lost three of their last four.

Dominique Wilkins scored a game-high 31 points and Kevin Willis added 20 for the Hawks.

Golden State 133, San Antonio 112--Latrell Sprewell scored 26 points and Tim Hardaway added 23 as the Warriors won at Oakland and ended the Spurs’ eight-game winning streak.

David Robinson scored 27 points to lead San Antonio, which lost for only the second time in its last 20 games.

The victory extended the Warriors’ winning streak to three.

Houston 149, Philadelphia 111--The Rockets shot a franchise-best 68.5%, and rookie Robert Horry had a career-high 29 points in a victory at Houston.

Horry made 11 of 15 shots from the field and seven of eight from the free throw line as the Rockets recorded a season-high point total.

New York 117, Dallas 87--Rookie Hubert Davis made his first seven shots and finished with 18 points during the rout at New York.

Sean Rooks led Dallas with 23 points. Charles Smith scored 16 for New York, which has won eight of nine games and is 22-4 at home.

New Jersey 100, Milwaukee 88--Drazen Petrovic and Derrick Coleman combined to score 25 of the Nets’ 29 fourth-quarter points in a come-from-behind victory at East Rutherford, N.J.

Petrovic finished with 28 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, and Coleman added 27 points and 16 rebounds. Blue Edwards led the Bucks with 21 points.

Seattle 112, Washington 102--Shawn Kemp scored 25 points and Ricky Pierce and Derrick McKey each added 20 as the Supersonics won at Seattle.

The SuperSonics scored their last nine points on free throws, including four by Gary Payton. The Bullets, losers of four in a row, were led by Larry Stewart, who scored 22 points.
