Share

The Cal Lutheran men’s basketball team did not go quietly into the record books Wednesday night. Rather, the Kingsmen did so with a flourish, sinking eight of 15 three-point shots as they tied the school record for victories in a season by whipping visiting Pomona-Pitzer, 92-61, in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game.

Cal Lutheran (18-4, 10-1 in conference play) tied the mark set in 1978.

Reserve guard Paul Tapp sank five of six three-point attempts and led the Kingsmen with 18 points. Guard Damon Ridley had 16 points, forward Derrick Clark 14, and center Rupert Sapwell added 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for Cal Lutheran.

The Sagehens, who shot only 35% from the field, fell to 14-8, 7-4.

In other men’s basketball games:

Bakersfield 64, Glendale 62--Tim Levier had a game-high 24 points to lead the visiting Renegades in a Western State Conference South Division game.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Ventura 63, Oxnard 55--Visiting Ventura (23-4, 15-0) led throughout most of a WSC North Division game that featured a second-half brawl that led to the ejection of four players.

With eight minutes to play, both benches cleared after players became entangled scrambling for a loose ball. When the melee had cleared, Ventura’s Cori Herman and Tara Sanders, and Oxnard’s Blanca Rodriguez and Rosa Aguilar were ejected.

Herman exited with 14 points. Ventura center Nicole Ellis scored a game-high 17 points. Julie Urango scored eight points for Oxnard.

Valley 88, Pierce 44--Ten Valley players scored as the visiting Monarchs jumped to a 48-16 first-half lead and coasted to their ninth victory without a loss in WSC South Division play.
