Share

Disabled children between the ages of 7 and 18 are invited to sign up for a free sports camp April 6 to 10 at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo.

The 13th annual Junior Wheelchair Sports and Tennis Training Camp, organized by the National Foundation of Wheelchair Tennis, will offer instruction and competition in tennis, basketball, track and field, archery, swimming and physical conditioning.

Individuals with both advanced and beginning skills are invited to attend, and free transportation will be provided to residents of Orange and Los Angeles counties. Campers must have good use of their upper extremities and possess self-help skills.

“We’re trying to get a head start on registrations this year and get a lot of kids out,” organizer Denise Stawicki said. Past camps have averaged about 100 participants each.

The camp’s instructors are disabled athletes who serve as role models for the campers, Stawicki said.

Camp sponsors include Everest & Jennings, the world’s largest maker of wheelchairs; the Newport-Irvine Rotary Club; L.A. Cellular; McDonnell Douglas Corp., and Mission Viejo.

Applications must be received by March 22. For more information or an application, call (714) 361-6811.
