SAN CLEMENTE : Senior Services to Get Help From City

Share

San Clemente Senior Services has received a boost from the city in its effort to buy the former Ramada Inn out of bankruptcy proceedings and convert it to low-cost senior housing.

A City Council majority on Wednesday agreed to help the nonprofit organization pay for a feasibility study of the proposed project and for an appraisal.

The $20,000 for the study and appraisal will come from a city Redevelopment Agency fund that can only be used to support affordable housing projects.

The study will examine comparable projects in the area and measure the demand for the proposed 110 apartments among low- and moderate-income senior citizens, city planner Leslie Davis said.

Results of the study would help the city decide whether it wants to continue its partnership with San Clemente Senior Services in trying to convert the hotel, the largest in the community.

Under the proposal, senior citizens would pay between $350 and $650 a month in rent and be provided two meals a day and weekly maid service. A typical apartment would be about 300 square feet and include balcony, microwave and refrigerator.
