Tiffany Recalls Lead-Tainted China

Tiffany & Co. announced a voluntary recall for hand-painted china that may exceed federal lead levels, marking the first time the famed retailer of crystal and jewels has ever recalled a product.

Recall letters were sent to 406 customers who bought the “Private Stock” foodware, French-made china that sells for more than $1,000 for a five-piece setting, the company said.

Tests by the Environmental Defense Fund found several plates had lead levels several hundred times above maximum legal levels for foodware. Tiffany said it will give merchandise credit for customers who return the china, which was sold in Tiffany stores throughout the country.
