MOORPARK : Board Will Delve Into Budget Morass

Share

Continuing to grapple with the prospect of a more than $1-million budget shortfall this fiscal year, the Moorpark school board on Tuesday will consider instituting a hiring freeze on all non-instructional positions.

The move to restrict some district hiring was suggested by Moorpark Unified School District board member Clint Harper as a means of cutting spending without compromising classroom education. Teaching positions would not be affected by the freeze.

Board member Tom Baldwin said Friday that while the district has changed some of its staffing levels to save money in recent years, it has not adopted a formal hiring freeze.

Baldwin said he had not made up his mind on the issue.

“I have some reservations,” Baldwin said. “I want to have some idea what this is going to save us in dollars and if it’s not going to save us money, I’m not sure it’s worth the loss of morale. If this is going to save us $10,000 or $20,000, then that’s just a drop in the bucket as opposed to the million dollars we need to make up.”

The board will discuss the possible freeze at its meeting beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Moorpark Community Center, 599 Moorpark Ave.
