FILLMORE : City Again Tries to Honor Ex-Attorney

Joseph Kern, Fillmore’s former city attorney, retired from full-time duties last year, but city officials are still trying to bid him a fond farewell.

Officials scheduled a reception in his honor for a City Council meeting earlier this month, but Kern was ill and unable to attend. Officials are planning to try it again at Tuesday’s meeting.

Kern, 60, went into semi-retirement July 1 but continued to provide occasional legal advice to the city through the end of January, officials said. The city retained Kern’s services part time until he reached the official retirement age, thereby enabling him to receive full benefits, Councilman Roger Campbell said.

“This was a courtesy to him because of so many excellent years of service,” Campbell said.

Kern was Fillmore’s city attorney for 22 years. He was succeeded by Roger Myers, of the Ventura law firm Myers, Widders & Gibson.

Kern, a lifelong resident of Fillmore, said he will maintain a small private practice. “I’d just like to stay home on Tuesday nights,” he said.

Because of his long tenure, Campbell said, most of Fillmore’s ordinances were authored by Kern. “He was very good for the city,” Campbell said.
