COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Iowa State, Unbeaten at Home, Upsets Kansas

Fred Hoiberg and Justus Thigpen each made a free throw in the final 25 seconds and Hoiberg made a key defensive play as Iowa State upset No. 7 Kansas, 75-71, Monday night at Ames to remain the Big Eight’s only unbeaten team at home.

Iowa State, 16-8 overall and 6-5 in the Big Eight, rallied from a six-point deficit in the second half to run its home record to 14-0 and win its 15th in a row at Hilton Coliseum over two seasons.

Kansas (21-5, 8-3) played without starting center Eric Pauley, who injured his left knee in pregame warm-ups, and got only one point in the second half from Adonis Jordan, the Jayhawks’ No. 2 scorer with a 12-point average.

But Kansas stayed in the game behind reserve center Greg Ostertag’s 16 points. Thigpen led Iowa State with 17 points.

UC Santa Barbara 86, No. 13 Nevada Las Vegas 83--Idris Jones scored 27 points, including key free throws in the closing seconds, to lead the Gauchos to an upset in a Big West Conference game.

UC Santa Barbara improved to 14-9 overall and 7-8 in conference. UNLV dropped to 17-4 and into a first-place tie with New Mexico State in conference at 10-3. J.R. Rider had 24 points for UNLV.

Temple 79, No. 16 Tulane 57--Eddie Jones scored a career-high 29 points to help Temple upset No. 16 Tulane at Philadelphia. The Owls (12-10), who never trailed, took their biggest lead at 55-30 with 13:52 to play. But Tulane (20-5) went on a 14-2 run and closed to 57-44. Temple scored 10 consecutive points to finish the game.

No. 18 Iowa 74, Penn State 58--Val Barnes scored 33 points, including 18 on six three-pointers, as the Hawkeyes (17-6, 6-5) beat the Nittany Lions (6-12, 1-12) in a Big Ten game at State College, Pa., in which a fan was ejected.

Jeff Kindig, a Penn State sophomore, was ordered to leave Recreation Hall after cursing at referee Sid Rodeheffer after a block by Iowa’s Acie Earl in the first half.

No. 19 New Orleans 71, Western Kentucky 67--Gerald Williams, a 5-foot-9 junior guard who had 27 points, sank the go-ahead basket and two key free throws in the second overtime as the Privateers clinched the Sun Belt Conference’s regular-season title with a 71-67 victory at Bowling Green, Ky.

Williams’ heroics came with 6-11 center Ervin Johnson and 6-8 Melvin Simon sitting on the bench with five fouls and before a sellout crowd of 11,424 in Diddle Arena.

Johnson had eight points, Simon two for New Orleans (21-2, 15-0). Darnell Mee had 20 points for Western Kentucky (18-5, 11-4).

Providence 53, No. 25 Pittsburgh 48--Pitt went scoreless for 8:25 late in the second half and lost at Providence in a game in which both teams were plagued by turnovers and poor free-throw shooting. The Panthers (15-8, 7-8), who lost their third consecutive game, scored only six points in the final 10:02. They shot 24% in the second half. The Friars (14-9, 7-8) missed 15 of 25 free throws and had 15 turnovers.
