After less than six months on the job, the top manufacturing executive at computer maker AST Research Inc. has resigned for personal reasons, the company said Tuesday.

Gordon Chilton, who joined AST to launch its long-planned European manufacturing operation as senior vice president of worldwide manufacturing, could not be reached for comment.

Safi U. Qureshey, chief executive of AST, said the company has no immediate plans to replace Chilton. He said the company still plans to build a manufacturing plant in Europe this year. Wei Szeto, vice president of corporate development, and other managers appointed by Chilton will be responsible for the European project, he said.
