SANTA CLARITA : McKeon Backs Bills on Immigration

Share

Rep. Howard (Buck) McKeon (R-Santa Clarita) has signed on as a co-sponsor of a six-part immigration reform package to be introduced today in Congress.

McKeon joined about 40 other members of Congress in backing the six bills authored by Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley), who until redistricting took affect last year had represented parts of Santa Clarita.

The bills would strengthen and expand the Border Patrol, introduce a counterfeit-resistant identification card for immigrants, stop federal welfare and unemployment benefits to illegal immigrants, impound vehicles used to transport illegal immigrants, and cut off federal money to local governments that do not assist the Immigration and Naturalization Service in arresting and deporting illegal immigrants.

All of the bills had been introduced in one form or another during the last Congress but died. A Gallegly spokesman said most of the co-sponsors of the bill are Republicans, while some Democrats in Southwest states have also signed on.
