NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : Pasadena Will Be Site of Senior Olympics in June

The 1993 Senior Olympics, featuring competition for men and women in 19 events, is scheduled for June 5-19 in Pasadena.

Participants 50 and older are eligible to compete in track and field, race walking and walking, swimming, golf, tennis, cycling, softball, lawn bowling, bowling, basketball and ice skating. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded in each age division, and winners will qualify for the state championships that will be contested in San Diego in September.

The Pasadena Games also will include race-walking and tennis for disabled athletes, and non-athletic competitions in chess, bridge, and ballroom dancing.

“The Olympic movement is a real source of inspiration for a lot of youngsters,” said John Naber, a gold medalist in swimming at the 1976 Munich Games and a member of the board of directors for the AAF/Rose Bowl Aquatic Center. “The Senior Olympics would be every bit as inspiring for seniors to watch and compete with their peers.”

Lou Farrar, who coached the Charter Oak football team to an unbeaten regular season, and Bob Rau, who guided Duarte to the championship game in Division VI, have been selected as coaches for a high school all-star game that will be played July 16 at Citrus College.

Farrar will coach the East team and Rau the West. Both will receive coach-of-the-year awards March 1 at a scholar-athlete awards dinner sponsored by the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame at Brookside Clubhouse in Pasadena.

Thirty high school scholar-athletes will be recognized at the event for their achievements in sports and in the classroom.

The Azusa Pacific men’s basketball team lost its No. 1 ranking in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics when the Cougars lost a nonconference against Biola Friday.

Azusa Pacific (25-3) is ranked second behind Oklahoma Baptist. The Cougars, who have clinched the Golden State Athletic championship, play Westmont Saturday in their final regular season game.

The men’s basketball teams from Mt. San Antonio College and Pasadena City College open play in the Southern California Regional of the state tournament Saturday.

Mt. SAC, which finished the regular season 13-16, is seeded 25th in the 32-team tournament. The Mounties play at eighth-seeded San Bernardino Valley (18-11) at 6 p.m.

Pasadena (12-16) is seeded 28th. The Lancers play at fifth-seeded Southwestern (25-6) in Chula Vista at 7 p.m.

The Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team has clinched a share of the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. championship and can win its 12th consecutive title outright if it defeats Chapman tonight.

Pomona, ranked eighth in Division II, is 21-2 and 9-1 in the CCAA. The Broncos defeated UC Riverside and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo last week.

If Pomona wins tonight, the Broncos will play host to the four-team CCAA tournament March 4-5. The winner of the tournament gains an automatic berth in the NCAA playoffs, which begin March 12-13.

The Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball team enters its CCAA finale against Cal State Los Angeles needing a victory to qualify for the conference’s postseason tournament.

Pomona is 13-12 and 6-7 in the CCAA. The Broncos are tied with Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State San Bernardino behind Cal State Bakersfield (13-0) and UC Riverside (9-4).

Cal State Los Angeles is 13-10 and 5-8 in the CCAA.

A triathlon that includes a three-mile run, 10-mile bike ride and 400-meter swim is scheduled for Sunday at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center in Pasadena.

The event is open to participants of all ages and experience levels.

A golf tournament sponsored by the South Pasadena Police Department will be played March 12 at the Arroyo Seco Golf Course.

The tournament is limited to 100 players and costs $25. Proceeds will go to the department’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education program.

Sign-ups are continuing for the Northview Little League Challenger Division, which offers baseball opportunities for players with special physical and mental needs.

Brookside golf course in Pasadena will be the site of the Mickey Rooney Celebrity Pro-Am tournament March 22. All proceeds benefit the Los Angeles Mission.

A pro-am celebrity tennis and golf tournament that will benefit shelters for battered women and children will be played April 30 and May 1 at La Verne Country Club.
