MWD to Repair Water Pipeline
The Metropolitan Water District has stopped water delivery to Glendale this week to inspect and repair a main pipeline through the city, which relies on MWD for 90% of its water.
The district and the city are taking advantage of the continued wet weather and local water sources to complete maintenance work on the pipeline, which supplies Northern California water to Glendale and adjoining cities, said Donald Froelich, city water services administrator.
The pipe runs west-east through the city, generally along Kenneth Road, Mountain Street and Glenoaks Boulevard. Froelich said the city’s 29 storage reservoirs--filled to capacity on Sunday--and three wells in the Verdugo Basin will provide an adequate supply to meet the city’s demands until work is completed Friday.
He said MWD crews are working around the clock to complete the project in time. Noise from nighttime construction and some traffic congestion were expected.
Michael P. Hopkins, city public service director, said Glendale’s maximum 10-day supply of local water “clearly points out the need for the city to develop more of its local water resources so as not to be almost totally dependent on a single source for water.”
He said several projects are under way or proposed, including expansion of a reclaimed water program, construction of a water treatment plant in Verdugo Park and a federal government cleanup of contaminated underground water in the San Fernando Valley Basin.
