Torrance to Choose Interim Treasurer
The Torrance City Council decided this week to appoint an interim city treasurer rather than schedule a special election to fill the post vacated by Thomas C. Rupert, who recently retired.
Council members Tuesday voted unanimously to solicit applications for the post, which next comes up for a regularly scheduled election in March, 1994. Deputy Treasurer Linda Barnett, now acting treasurer, is a leading candidate, Mayor Katy Geissert said.
Rupert’s retirement took effect Feb. 17, and the council has 30 days to fill the job by appointment. If no appointment is made, the city must have a special election, which would cost the financially strapped city an estimated $80,000.
