Golfers Stay Clear of Traps With Sportswear That’s Above Par
Take a look at today’s golf course and you’re not likely to see a lot of traditional duffer wear.
“Golf fashion is moving away from ‘golfy’-looking apparel and going toward a more stylish country-club look,” says David Walther, assistant manager of Nevada Bob’s Discount Golf in Laguna Hills.
Today’s golfers want fashionable, yet functional, apparel that transcends the golf course to everyday activities, agrees David Roderick, president of the golf-apparel manufacturer Avid Sportswear. “The days of the plain, solid golf shirt are gone.”
Many of today’s golf-wear fashions are also moving toward a European look with a traditional Western influence, adds Kathi Corvi, the buyer for Monarch Beach Golf Links in Dana Point.
For apparel sure to positively affect the look of your golf game, here’s a sampling of stores:
AMERICAN CLASSIC GOLF SHOP
This store carries a large selection of golf wear by a variety of makers. Dress up for the course in a PGA Tour shirt. The 50% cotton, 50% polyester short-sleeved top is beige. It has a right-hand pocket and a tour collar ($19-$35, sizes small to extra, extra large).
Pair the shirt with dark brown Royal slacks. These pants have four pockets and are made of 50% cotton, 50% polyester. They come unhemmed to accommodate a variety of heights ($20-$45, sizes 28-44).
Keep the sun’s rays at bay with a Titleist visor in black or white. Instead of plastic, this adjustable cap is made of soft cloth ($8).

GOLF EMPORIUM
Look good on the green in this store’s Nike 100% cotton multiprint shirt of purple, blue and white on a black background. It has a polo-type collar and three buttons in the front ($43, sizes medium to extra large).
The store also carries Nike black 100% cotton slacks. These have a pleated front and four pockets. The pants come unhemmed for adjustment purposes ($50, sizes 28-40).
Keep the cool air out with a Nike Windbreaker. This navy and royal blue jacket has a zipper and snap button front. It is 100% nylon on the outside with cotton lining. There are two zipper pockets and elastic at the base of the jacket. Large and extra large sizes available ($46).
This outfit can be enhanced with a Callaway black straw hat with the maker’s name written across the front ($26).

HOUSE OF GOLF
Available here is the Sport Thompson 100% cotton shirt which has a multicolored geometric design in a variety of colors. It’s short-sleeved, with a right breast pocket. “This shirt is really durable and long-lasting,” says store owner Jack Birnbaum. It comes in sizes small to extra, extra large ($28).
The store also has a white sweater-vest Birnbaum says goes well with the shirt. This V-neck pull-over is 100% polyester ($25-$35, sizes small to extra, extra large).
The look can be finished with Sport Thompson 60% cotton, 40% polyester black pants. These have two pockets on each side and for added comfort, two adjustable buttons on the waist. The pants come unhemmed so that the length can be adjusted ($35, sizes 36-44).

GOLF AND TENNIS
Look fashionable on the golf course in this store’s Head 100% cotton short-sleeved shirt. The turquoise, purple and white striped top has banded sleeves and a soft collar. It comes in sizes small to extra large ($50).

Keep warm on the course in a long-sleeved SDI sweat shirt made of French terry cotton. It is black with khaki-colored accents and can be embroidered with your club logo. The sweat shirt’s crew neck reaches the throat ($65, sizes medium to extra large).

At this store, you’ll find Sport Thompson khaki-colored pleated pants. They are made of 50% cotton, 50% polyester and have four pockets ($40, sizes 30-40). Team these with a Hogan Legend short-sleeved, soft collar shirt. This 100% cotton cream top has a geometric design pattern in blue and gray ($45, sizes medium-large and extra large).

Carried here is a variety of golf wear, including Ashworth double- and triple-pleat 100% combed cotton twill pants. “The pant’s tapered legs are both functional and stylish and give a ’50 look,” says the store’s buyer Ruth Kirk. The slacks come in khaki, stone gray, cream, black, charcoal and wheat ($66, sizes 32-36).
There is also an Avid 100% cotton soft-collar shirt. This comes in a variety of colors, including white, blue, black, cream and khaki ($54-$57, sizes medium to extra, extra large).
The Gear Clipper jacket is the most popular seller, says Kirk. This waterproof polyester/cotton poplin coat is fully lined and has a vented back. It is available in white with a navy accent or billiard green and a navy accent ($85, sizes medium to extra large).
