NBA ROUNDUP : Dumars Has 43 Points to Lead Pistons in Rout Over Knicks

Joe Dumars scored 43 points and had a team-record seven three-point baskets as the Detroit Pistons ended New York’s four-game winning streak with a 108-80 victory over the Knicks on Friday night at Auburn Hills, Mich.

Detroit finished with 12 three-pointers, also a club record, as the Pistons won their fourth consecutive home game. The Knicks, who had won two in a row and six of their previous seven on the road, got 21 points from Patrick Ewing.

Dennis Rodman, the NBA’s leading rebounder whom the Pistons tried unsuccessfully to trade before the deadline Thursday, had 12 rebounds.

Indiana 137, Charlotte 105--Rik Smits scored a career-high 37 points and added 12 rebounds and six assists as the Pacers beat the Hornets at Indiana.

The 7-foot-4 Smits had 23 points by halftime and did not play in the fourth quarter as the Pacers set a season high for total points.

After guarding Smits for much of the game, Charlotte center Alonzo Mourning was ejected for throwing a punch in the third quarter.

“I was trying to get him off me,” Mourning said of Smits. “If I wanted to hit (Smits), I would have hit him. Believe me, when you see me swing at somebody, I swing at somebody. I would have connected, and it wouldn’t have been a tap.”

The Hornets, who have not won in 10 games at Market Square Arena, were led by Larry Johnson’s 19 points and Dell Curry’s 16.

Portland 102, New Jersey 91--Clyde Drexler scored 10 of his 26 points in the first quarter as the Trail Blazers won at East Rutherford, N.J.

Cliff Robinson added 20 points as Portland won for only the fourth time in 11 games and ended a season-high two-game road losing streak.

Portland Coach Rick Adelman shook up the Trail Blazers’ starting lineup by replacing Jerome Kersey and Buck Williams with Mark Bryant and Robinson.

The Nets are winless in three games since the All-Star break and their season-high six-game home winning streak came to an end. Derrick Coleman led New Jersey with 17 points.

Orlando 92, Washington 91--Nick Anderson banked in a three-point basket with 1.8 seconds to play and the Magic ended a four-game road losing streak by defeating the Bullets at Landover, Md.

Shaquille O’Neal scored 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Scott Skiles added 20 points for the Magic. Orlando trailed, 91-89, before Anderson scored his last-second basket over Tom Gugliotta.

LaBradford Smith scored a career-high 22 points, Gugliotta had 21 and Michael Adams 20 for the Bullets, who dressed only nine players and lost starting center Pervis Ellison to a strained left knee in the first quarter.

Miami 93, San Antonio 86--Bimbo Coles scored six of his 18 points on free throws in the final 38 seconds to lead the Heat at Miami.

Grant Long led Miami with 25 points and 17 rebounds, including 12 on the offensive end to tie a team record. The loss was the third in a row and fourth in five games for the Spurs, who played without All-Star forward Sean Elliott, sidelined because of a back strain.

San Antonio center David Robinson scored 17 points despite playing with his shooting hand taped because of a sprained thumb.

Phoenix 113, Utah 106--Charles Barkley scored 29 points and Dan Majerle added 28 to lead the Suns to their 19th consecutive home victory.

John Stockton scored 25 points and Karl Malone 24 for Utah, which lost for the 12th consecutive time at Phoenix, where it has not won since March 7, 1986.

Barkley also had 11 rebounds and 11 assists, for his fourth triple-double of the season. He has 15 in his career.

“I don’t think we’re going to blow everybody out,” said Barkley, who had 11 points, five assists and three rebounds in the fourth quarter. “We’ve got to learn to win games like this. I think games like this are good, because when you get in a pressure situation you have to find a way.”

Dan Majerle added 28 points and Richard Dumas 20 for the Suns.

Boston 110, Atlanta 99--Kevin Gamble scored 27 points and Sherman Douglas added seven of his 17 points in the final 2:17 as the Celtics won at Atlanta.

Boston took command early in the fourth quarter when Reggie Lewis scored 11 consecutive points to give the Celtics a 97-86 lead.

Dominique Wilkins led the Hawks with 36 points.

Lewis finished with 19 and Xavier McDaniel 16 as the Celtics ended Atlanta’s two-game winning streak. Mookie Blaylock added 22 points, including five three-pointers, for the Hawks.

Philadelphia 114, Milwaukee 111--Jeff Hornacek’s basket after a rebound with 24 seconds to play helped the 76ers end a four-game losing streak with a victory at Philadelphia.

Hersey Hawkins led the 76ers with 26 points, and Hornacek, who scored 20 in the first half, finished with 22.

Eric Murdock had 21 points and Blue Edwards 20 for Milwaukee, which has lost five in a row.

Minnesota 99, Dallas 89--Doug West scored 15 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter as the Timberwolves won at Minneapolis.

Christian Laettner added 18 points and 15 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who won their sixth consecutive game against the Mavericks.

Derek Harper scored 23 points for the Mavericks, who have lost nine in a row.

Seattle 141, Sacramento 120--Shawn Kemp scored 16 of his 28 points in the first quarter at Sacramento, and the SuperSonics won their sixth in a row.

Ricky Pierce scored 25 points and Eddie Johnson added 24 for the Sonics, who outscored the Kings, 42-29, in the second quarter and shot 64.6% in the first half.

Sam Perkins, playing in his first game since being acquired from the Lakers last Monday, scored 10 points for the SuperSonics.

Wayman Tisdale and Walt Williams had 17 points apiece for Sacramento, which has lost 13 of 14 games.
