Community Meets Art in Getty Series

“The Aesthetics of Community-Based Art Making: A Public Exchange,” a series of multicultural performances, lectures, exhibitions and screenings, runs Wednesday to next Sunday. The series is sponsored by the Getty Center for the History of Art and the Humanities and explores the dynamic relationships between artists, their communities, societal ills and traditional cultural forms.

Reservations are required on a first-come, first-served basis. Thursday through Saturday events are free, and the Sunday event is $10. Reservations: (310) 451-6526 unless otherwise noted.

WEDNESDAY: “Fierce Tongue/Fabulous Latina: A Reading With Gloria Anzaldua,” poetry reading. Occidental College, Johnson Hall, 1600 Campus Road, Eagle Rock, (213) 259-8922. 7:30 p.m.

THURSDAY: “Perspectives on L.A.,” includes a performance dialogue on “Where Art and Citizenship Intersect,” with such artists as Roland Charles and Dan Kwong; a lecture by “Life & Times” co-host Ruben Martinez, and “Beginning to See . . . Reflections on L.A. Through the Eyes of Youth,” an independent video production of works by student video artists. Jodo Shu Betsuin Buddhist Temple, 442 E. 3rd St. 7:30-10 p.m.

FRIDAY: “Community Art: Production, Connection & Cultural Politics in L.A.,” includes excerpts from the bilingual stage play “Rushing Waters,” by Migdalia Cruz, and a dialogue with performers and elected officials. Rotunda, City Hall, 200 N. Spring St., 3rd floor. 7:30-9:30 p.m.

SATURDAY: “From the Margins to Center Stage,” a program honoring artists confronting challenges such as homelessness, gender and ethnic discrimination and AIDS; an art exhibition curated by Marietta Bernstorff, and performances by Madres (Mothers and Daughters Reaching Empowered States), choreographed by Sarah Elgart. Bradbury Building, 304 S. Broadway, South Portico Entrance, 3rd and Broadway. 6-10 p.m.

“CalArts Public Symposium,” with panelists including representatives of the National Assn. of Artist Organizations, CalArts, Urban Bushwomen, Alternative Roots, Deep Dish Television and other organizations. CalArts, 24700 McBean Parkway, Valencia, (805) 255-1000, Ext. 2120. 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

SUNDAY: “Visions & Voice: Community Arts Bus Tour,” tour of alternative art spaces curated by CARS, featuring installations, murals, films, dance, en-route performances, performance lecture and interactions with artists. Reservations through Theatrix, (213) 466-1767. 12:30-4:30 p.m.
