Toy T. Caldwell Jr., 45, former lead guitar player, singer and composer for the Marshall Tucker Band. Caldwell and brother Tommy Caldwell, a bass player who died after a car accident in 1980, were the core of the band formed in 1971 and named for the piano tuner who owned their Spartanburg, S.C., rehearsal hall. Toy Caldwell wrote some of the band’s hits, including “Can’t You See.” The group, which played at President Jimmy Carter’s inauguration, had seven gold and two platinum albums. Caldwell left the reconstituted band in 1985 and released his first solo album last year, titled “Toy Caldwell.” On Thursday in Spartanburg, S.C., of complications from influenza and bronchitis.
