Society Left Out

Share

We were pleased to see the three-page spread in the Jan. 29 issue given to Valley historical societies and the work they do to preserve local history.

We were disappointed that the story did not include Calabasas Historical Society, particularly because it quoted Robert Marshall, archivist at the Urban Archives Center at CSUN. Mr. Marshall has been in contact with our librarian, Rosemary Hulle.

As its major focus, the Calabasas Historical Society maintains the Kathleen Beachy Memorial Collection at Pierce College Library. Housed in a special room is an extensive collection of books, pamphlets, oral history tapes, a file of historical photographs and microfilm of local newspapers. These items are listed in the Pierce Library card catalogue, maintained by our credentialed librarian and used by students, journalists, researchers for television, Caltrans, and for environmental impact reports.

Founded in 1979, Calabasas Historical Society has carried through on a number of projects:

* Walking tours of historic sites on Calabasas Road and Park Moderne, the artist colony established in the ‘20s.

* Contributed funds, reference books and a display case to Malibu Creek State Park.

* Created a display at the Las Virgenes School District administration office of pictures and memorabilia of the four original one-room schools.

* Participated in community projects such as Old Town Calabasas Coalition and the Calabasas Pumpkin Festival.

* Provided Pierce Library with displays to catch student interest.

* Made money awards to students of CSUN’s history department for taped interviews concerning early life in the San Fernando Valley.

And we do not consider ourselves “little old ladies.”
