OUTLOOK

The Vanguards have a lot of experience, especially on the mound. Hanson and May were starters last season and should fill that role again, with Krishfield and Nygren helping out. May was a first-team all-league selection a year ago, and Hanson is a three-year letterman. The infield is solid with Volz, Smith and Frederick. Goerlinger moves from first base to the outfield to make room for Holmes, who could supply power. Viramontes is a three-year starter and a tough hitter. He, Smith and Goerlinger should be the team’s top hitters. The problem will be replacing catcher Gavin Brown, a two-time all-league selection now at California. Mitchell, the junior varsity MVP, and Turner will battle for the job. With the experience and pitching, the Vanguards should do much better then their fifth-place finish of a year ago.
