Countywide : 2,000 Will Walk to Help Feed Hungry
More than 2,000 Ventura County residents are expected to take part in annual walks later this week designed to raise money for the hungry.
On Sunday, participants at seven sites around the county will set off on 10-kilometer walks, after soliciting pledges benefiting local food pantries and international relief organizations.
The charitable event--spearheaded locally by Project Understanding--grew out of events organized by the now-defunct Christian Rural Overseas Programs. CROP walks have been held nationally since 1969.
Last year, the Ventura County walks raised about $100,000, local organizers said.
A quarter of the pledges will stay in Ventura County, and the rest will be distributed in the United States and abroad by Church World Service and other organizations.
“Last year we raised more than $10,000 in Moorpark alone,” said Walt Dilg, a Methodist minister and Moorpark CROP walk organizer. From that total, Dilg said, about $2,600 was allocated to the Moorpark food pantry.
Local churches are organizing CROP walks in Camarillo, Moorpark, Ojai, Oxnard-Port Hueneme, Santa Paula, Thousand Oaks and Ventura. Registration will begin at about noon for most sites.
