Tchaikovsky to Kick Off Bowl Season : Music: The official opening on July 6 commemorates the centennial of the composer’s death.

The 72nd season at Hollywood Bowl officially begins July 6 with a Tchaikovsky program commemorating the centennial of the composer’s death. David Zinman conducts the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and young Argentinian pianist Nelson Goerner makes his local debut with the B-minor Concerto.

According to a preliminary announcement released by Philharmonic executive vice president Ernest Fleischmann and Bowl general manager Anne Parsons, Summer Festival 93 will feature more than 50 orchestral concerts, plus jazz, chamber music and the Open House at Hollywood Bowl series for young people.

Philharmonic music director Esa-Pekka Salonen leads the orchestra in four programs Aug. 3-12. Guest conductors include Philharmonic debutants Bobby McFerrin and Yakov Kreizberg and Sylvain Cambreling in his Bowl debut.

Zubin Mehta conducts the Israel Philharmonic in three programs Aug. 24-26. Flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal serves the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra as soloist and conductor Aug. 4.

John Mauceri leads the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra in three of the weekend programs with fireworks--the traditional “Great American Concert” and “Tchaikovsky Spectacular,” plus a “Moscow Nights” agenda with baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky over Labor Day weekend--and pops weekends in July with Ella Fitzgerald and Natalie Cole.

The preview week begins with a Philharmonic tribute to Jerry Herman June 30 and a concert conducted by Christopher Hogwood July 1. Mauceri and the HBO follow with Independence Day concerts July 2-4.

The Virtuoso Series includes concerts by duo-pianists Katia and Marielle Lebeque, Summit Brass, two concerts previously noted by the Israel Philharmonic and L.A. Chamber Orchestra, and a fifth event yet to announced.

Also unannounced were details of the jazz events and the chamber music series across the freeway at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre.
