LOS ANGELES : Board May Approve 3-Day Pass as Trail Use Alternative
The Board of Supervisors will decide Tuesday whether to approve a $6, three-day pass as an alternative to a $23 annual fee for hikers and equestrians who use county trails, a county official said Thursday.
Supervisor Ed Edelman said the financially strapped county can no longer afford to pay for the upkeep of the 330-mile trail system. The county’s estimated budget deficit for the coming fiscal year is between $845 million and $1.1 billion.
The revenue generated by the annual fee and the proposed three-day pass will go directly to the Department of Parks and Recreation, which will spend the money solely on the trails. Children under 16 will be exempt from both fees.
“Without it, we’d have to close the trails or they wouldn’t be as safe and people could get hurt,” Edelman said.
The board held a public hearing on the three-day pass issue Thursday, but only two people showed up to speak.
