Countywide : Veteran Deputy Will Head Transit Police

Share

Sgt. Cathy Zurn, a 13-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department, today becomes chief of the Orange County Transportation Authority’s transit police.

Zurn will oversee OCTA’s security program and supervise a staff that includes contract security officers, who eventually will be replaced by Sheriff’s Department personnel.

“We’re very pleased to have completed this new security arrangement,” said Marlene Heyser, OCTA’s director of human resources. “As Orange County has become more urban, the need to provide additional protection for OCTA transit services, customers, employees and property has increased.”

Under a new, $1.2-million contract that runs through June 30, 1994, Sheriff’s Department special officers will perform security services and patrol OCTA facilities including bus terminals and park-and-ride lots, and respond to calls for assistance.

OCTA’s chief of public safety, Mike Runyon, will join the Sheriff’s Department as a sergeant in the emergency communications bureau.
