Lamond Murray made three free throws in the final two minutes, then blocked Damon Stoudamire’s three-point attempt at the buzzer to give California a 74-71 upset of No. 3 Arizona on Thursday night at the Oakland Coliseum Arena, ending the nation’s longest winning streak at 19 games.

The Bears (16-8 overall, 8-6 in the Pacific 10) improved to 6-1 since Todd Bozeman became coach Feb. 8. Arizona (21-3, 14-1) failed in its bid to become the first team to go undefeated in conference play since the expansion to 10 teams. UCLA, in 1978, was the last team to go undefeated in conference play.

The loss left Coppin State with the nation’s longest winning streak at 13 games.

Trailing 73-71, Arizona forced a turnover and had a chance to tie. But Khalid Reeves, who scored 21 points for the Wildcats, was called for an offensive foul with seven seconds to play. Murray was fouled on the inbounds pass and made one of two free throws.

Cal trailed, 57-54, with 10:05 to play before outscoring Arizona, 16-5, in the next six minutes. Two free throws by Alfred Grigsby gave Cal its biggest lead, 70-62, with 4:31 remaining.

Arizona State 75, Stanford 71--Stevin Smith scored 21 points, including 18 in the second half, as the Sun Devils rallied to overcome an 18-point second-half deficit at Stanford.

Smith, the conference’s leading scorer, made five three-pointers in the second half. Arizona State improved its record to 17-7, 10-5.

Stanford fell to 7-20 overall and 2-13.
