What Happened to News? : ‘Harvest’ Not ‘Passed Over’

Share

It is unfortunate that Kenneth Turan would resort to rumor (“The Declaration of Independents,” Feb. 18), causing great distress to the filmmakers of “Black Harvest” (“ ‘Harvest’ Shows What Really Happened,” Saturday Letters, Feb. 27). If Turan had checked his facts and talked to Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences staff or the chair of the Academy Documentary Committee, he would have found that the rumor was categorically untrue.

The committee did not “pass over” the film but, in fact, thought very highly of it. “Black Harvest,” as all of the 82 feature documentaries submitted this year, was judged solely on its merit. With many extraordinary films, only five could be selected for nomination. FREIDA LEE MOCK, Chair
