In the 76-year history of the NHL, there has never been a rookie quite like the Winnipeg Jets’ Teemu Selanne.

Not at the rate he puts pucks in the net and points in the scorebook.

Selanne added three more goals--one on his first penalty shot--to reach the 100-point mark in the Jets’ 4-2 victory Tuesday night over the Tampa Bay Lightning at Tampa.

Selanne, who last week broke Mike Bossy’s 1972 first-year mark of 53 goals, has 59 to go along with 42 assists. He joins Peter Stastny (109 points during the 1980-81 season for Quebec), Dale Hawerchuk (103 in 1981-82 for Winnipeg) and Mario Lemieux (100 in 1984-85 for Pittsburgh) as the only rookies to score 100 points.

With 16 games to play, Selanne seems certain to add the point record to his goal mark.

Selanne got his fifth hat trick of the season on the penalty shot 1:09 into the third period. He was tripped from behind by Marc Bergevin, resulting in a league-high sixth penalty shot involving Tampa Bay this season.

Pittsburgh 3, Boston 2--Mario Lemieux made an emotional return to Pittsburgh after his two-months of radiation treatments for Hodgkin’s disease.

Lemieux took regular shifts and also played on the power play as Penguin fans waved black-and-gold “Mario” signs in his first home game since Jan. 5.

Lemieux assisted on Pittsburgh’s first goal.

The two-time defending Stanley Cup champions broke a two-game losing streak, were 1-4-1 in their previous six games and 2-7-1 in their last 10.

Minnesota 4, San Jose 2--Dave Gagner scored twice in a 1:56 span of the second period at Bloomington, Minn., and the North Stars responded to a challenge from owner Norman Green.

Minnesota has struggled since talk of the club moving to Dallas next season became serious in mid-February.

Green chastised the players Monday for their poor play in recent weeks. The North Stars are 3-8-1 in their last 12 games.

New York Islanders 4, Philadelphia 2--Pierre Turgeon had a goal and two assists at Uniondale, N.Y., to lead the Islanders past the Flyers for their season-high fifth consecutive victory.

Kevin Dineen’s 29th goal for Philadelphia was his 13th in his last 16 games.

Washington 3, Toronto 1--Michal Pivonka’s goal snapped a 1-1 tie 6:48 into the third period at Landover, Md., and the Capitals ended a five-game winless streak by beating the Maple Leafs.

The loss was only the second in Toronto’s last 13 games.

Vancouver 7, New Jersey 2--Geoff Courtnall scored twice, and Cliff Ronning had a goal and two assists as the Canucks routed the Devils at Vancouver.
