East Whittier : Former Candidate Named to Open School Board Seat

Share

Trustees have selected a parent and PTA leader to fill a vacant board seat for the East Whittier City School District. Board members unanimously chose David F. Weitzel after interviewing nine applicants.

Weitzel, who ran unsuccessfully for the school board in 1989, has children attending district elementary and middle schools. He works as a physician’s assistant in Huntington Park. He also has been a PTA president.

Weitzel will replace Paula Hodgin, who resigned. He will serve until November, when he must run for office if he wants to retain his seat on the five-member board.

Board members said they chose to appoint a replacement rather than hold a special election to spare the district the cost of an election.

The district has 7,600 elementary and middle school students and serves eastern Whittier, parts of La Mirada and nearby unincorporated county areas.
